A small split in flat vinyl or leather can be patched at home if you do it now. A tear along a seam, or anything bigger than a couple of inches, needs a new panel from an upholstery shop.

That split in your driver’s seat didn’t happen overnight, and every time you slide in and out of the car it gets a little bigger.
Why it happened
The outside bolster takes your full weight every time you get in and out. The material stretches, the finish or stitching weakens, and it gives out right where you rub it. Sun and age speed it up. It’s wear, not a defect, so it won’t stop on its own.
What to do right now
- Stop sliding across the bolster. Sit down first, then swing your legs in.
- Don’t pull or trim the frayed edge. Leave it for the repair.
- Cover it or patch it this week. Most tears grow because clothes catch them.
DIY or shop
DIY works when the split is under about 2 inches, in the flat part of the seat, in vinyl or leather, and not on a seam. Slide the backing fabric under the tear, glue it down, fill, match the grain, add color. Take your time on the color match.
Shop for anything on a seam, any big tear, or any tear showing foam. The shop cuts out the bad panel and sews in a new one. On vinyl and cloth that’s easy. On leather, matching the color and grain is the hard part.
What it costs
- Repair kit: $40 to $120
- One panel replaced at an upholstery shop: $150 to $300
- Full seat re-cover: $375 to $950 depending on material
Keep it from happening again
Condition leather twice a year. Use a seat cover on cloth seats if you’re hard on them. Keep keys, tools and a thick wallet out of your back pocket.
Take it to a shop if the tear is on a seam, the foam underneath is showing or crumbling, the seat has a side airbag (it's in the outer bolster, and the stitching there is engineered, so don't sew it yourself), or it's cloth bigger than a coin.
