The Pro's Verdict
DIY it

Most spills come out if you act fast, blot instead of rubbing and use the right cleaner. Old stains that keep coming back need an extractor or a pro.

DIY difficulty

The first five minutes after a spill matter more than anything you’ll scrub later.

What to do right now

  1. Blot, don’t rub. Press a clean white towel on it and lift. Rubbing pushes it deeper and spreads it.
  2. Use cold water, not hot. Heat sets stains.
  3. Work from the outside edge toward the middle so it doesn’t spread.
  4. Use the right cleaner for the stain (below).
  5. Let it dry fully before deciding it’s gone. Stains often show back up as they dry.

By stain type

  • Coffee, soda, juice: upholstery cleaner and cold water.
  • Milk, food, pet, vomit: enzyme cleaner. Skipping this is how you end up with a smell.
  • Grease, oil: cover with baking soda or cornstarch for 15 minutes, vacuum, then use a degreasing upholstery cleaner.
  • Ink: dab rubbing alcohol on a cloth (not the seat), then blot. Test a hidden spot first.
  • Leather and vinyl: wipe with a leather cleaner. Don’t scrub.

When the stain comes back

A brown ring that returns as the seat dries means the stain soaked into the foam. Surface cleaning won’t reach it. Use an extractor or take it to a pro.

What it costs

  • DIY cleaners: $15 to $60
  • Pro seat extraction: $75 to $200 per seat

Keep it from happening again

Keep a towel and a small bottle of upholstery cleaner in the car. A fabric guard treatment gives you more time to react.

When to call a pro

Call a pro if the stain is old, if it keeps coming back after it dries (the stain is in the foam), or if it's ink or dye on leather.
